Last week I was invited to Celtic manor in Newport for the M&IT Agency Challenge, this being the first time I have attended anything like this I was a little unsure of what to expect.
The aim for the challenge was to get to know as many suppliers and venues as possible! To do this the M&IT team put together a series of team activities that, in our groups we would compete to win the challenge award.
After spending the first half of the day listening to presentations by some very interesting venues we then split up into our groups and started the first challenge. The first challenge for our team was ‘On Target’, this involved a mixture of laser clay shooting and Archery. Having never done either of these before I was excited to give them a go! I must say, it’s a lot harder than I thought it would be! Although, our team still won. This game was a really good way for The Celtic Manor to showcase some of their newly invested activity facilities first having a small walk through the grounds to reach the activity centre and then also demonstrating how these games could be used as a breakout for events. Once we had completed the activity we headed back to the Manor and there were some more presentations from venues including The Celtic Manor’s presentation on their new state of the art conference centre.
After several presentations and quiz’s, the second breakout began. This one was called ‘’It’s a Knockout’’ and was a large inflatable obstacle course featuring various slides, holes and jumps! This was a really fun challenge and again showcased the new activities available at The Celtic Manor. We were then invited to a BBQ in the evening where we had another chance to network with other agency staff and suppliers.
We kicked off the second day with more supplier presentations and quiz’s then we broke out for the final challenge which was to produce a short 2-minute video on ‘Fake News’, this as you may have guessed involved a lot of Donald Trump themed content! After filming these we headed back to the main room for the final presentations from suppliers. The presentations varied from Butlin’s resort in Bognor Regis to Sandals Resort in Jamaica, both of which were very informative and I was surprised to see how Butlin’s has been really working towards corporate clients and offered an interesting option from the normal conference venues. After the final round of presentations, we were then invited to the Gala Dinner which took place at the Celtic Manors golf club house which played host to the Ryder Cup in 2010. Again, The Celtic Manor had a great opportunity to show us their facilities and also showcase their catering abilities. Throughout the Gala dinner we watched all of the videos from the final challenge and the M&IT Challenge winners were announced! Unfortunately, we didn’t win but we came a solid 3rd out of the 9!
Overall, the M&IT challenge was a really informative few days and was a great way to create relationships with suppliers and find out more about their venues. The whole event was organised very well by the M&IT team and I would certainly recommend it to any Event Managers, and I will hopefully see you there next year!
